The Winnipeg Birth Control Society was founded by Mary Speechly, Olive Patton, and Margaret Hillsman in 1934. As the Winnipeg Birth Control Society was a way for women to spread information on birth control to lower class women throughout Manitoba, they focused on lower-class women who wanted to seek means of controlling their families size. In 1952 the Winnipeg Birth Control Society changed its name to the Family Planning Association of Winnipeg, and in 1976 became a part of Planned Parenthood Manitoba Inc., but has evolved to the Sexuality Education Resource Centre Manitoba. I found this article very interesting as this is the first information I’ve read about the Winnipeg Birth Control Society, which allowed me to read on yet another case of how small societies and communities of revolutionary women came together to provide lacking services to their communities. I also found it extremely interesting how many of these societies and communities joined the Planned Parenthood community, and I would like to see more information in my future research about the rise of Planned Parenthood.
